OK, there are 39 different books in the protestant OT. There are several different authors, for example; the first five books, called the pentateuch, (Genesis, Exodus, leviticus, Numbers, Dueteronomy) are mainly recognized to have been written by Moses (Neh 13:1 , 2 Chr. 25:4). Joshua through Esther are referred to as Historical books, the authors of these are mostly unknown. Then are the poetry books and wisdom literature, the Psalms were mostly written by David. the others (Proverbs, Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes) were mostly written by his son Solomon. Job's author is unknown, it is often considered the oldest book, is thought to have been written around 1500 bc. The rest make up the Major and Minor prophets. The major and minor have to do with the size of the books. Most use the authors name as the title and were written between 750 bc and 250 bc (aprox). If you're looking for any more info, any "study bible" should contain information for you or go to an OT commentary for more detailed information.

Both the New Testament and Old Testament books where originally written and copies on a material called papyrus. It was made from reeds and was very fragile. It usually lasted about 40 years before beginning to disintegrate. Because of this, the number of manuscripts before 200AD (and the invention of vellum) is very small. Not just Bible, but ALL books from before that time are extremely rare.
So most recent "finds" have been NT books simply because the NT was written in the century before the invention of vellum, and made its way to the less perishable medium quickly. It would be into the Middle Ages before the Jews would make the "switch" from traditional papyrus vellum and then paper. So the number of Old Testament manuscripts is much smaller and from much later then the New Testament ones.

A. The 66 books of the Bible were written:
1. On three continents.
2. In three languages.
3. By about 40 different people (kings, shepherds, scientists, attorneys, an army general, fishermen, priests, and a physician).
4. Over a period of about 1,500 years.
5. On the most controversial subjects.
6. By people who, in most cases, had never met.
7. By authors whose education and background varied greatly.
B. Yet, though it seems totally inconceivable,
1. The 66 books maintain harmony with each other.
2. Often new concepts on a subject are expressed, but these concepts do not undermine what other Bible writers say on the same subject.
