I just had this done. Dentist went to pull a tooth that had broken in half lengthwise. It broke off at the gumline when he went to extract. He grabbed another instrument, and tugged the thing out. It was out before I knew it. Painless, and it healed perfectly. No worries. Get it done before it gets abcessed!

I had all four wisdom teeth that had broken down way below the gum line. All I had left were the roots and my gums had actually begin to try to grow over the holes. I was FREAKED out about how they were going to pull out the roots!! I went in last month and had 2 removed. I had about 6 shots of Novocaine and I closed my eyes (I was still conscious for the whole thing though). I felt nothing and the next thing I knew, the dentist was holding the broken roots in the pliers. I have no idea how he did that. They stitched up the holes and that was that.

I had waited 5+ years to get those 2 root 'stumps' pulled out. I've still got to deal with the other 2. I only had one bad infection where I had to press on my gums to get the puss out but it cleared up on it's own (amazingly). All 4 of my wisdom teeth were 'visually' not there but the roots remained and my gums were open so you could see what was left of the teeth. Apparently, the dentist told me they were always mildly infected. That explained the constant sour taste in the back of my mouth and occasional bad smell if I poked at the area. Food would get stuck in the whole and brushing never totally cleaned it out. (Gross, I know)

If you don't get the extraction, you can eventually get an abscess in there and/or end up in a LOT of pain someday. When that happens, you've got to go and get antibiotics and wait for the infection to clear up. It's possible that the infection will reoccur until you get the tooth out. A friend of mine waited too long to get a tooth extracted and the abscess was so bad that antibiotics wasn't helping. Her whole face swelled up. The dentist needed to drain the area before he pulled the tooth which cost her an extra $500!!! The extraction itself would have only been about $100-150.

Another dentist told me that a severely infected tooth can kill you if it gets bad enough. He said something about the infection getting into your brain or blood stream or something...

You need to see an oral surgeon to have the tooth surgical removed. If you don't get it take out you may get in infection that will cause other serious health issues. It's hard to believe a tooth can cause major medical problems but it can.Infection makes you sick and can be spread throughout your body from a bad tooth.I neglected getting a broken tooth taken out because it wasn't bothering me-I ended up really sick because it became inflamed and spread to my sinuses
and lungs.Don't be stupid like I was get it taken care of.

Probably they will give anesthetic and cut it out and if you don't, then it might get infected eventually?
