Ragapple is correct. There is a split (and heated debate) among the AKC and the JRTCA about Jack Russell conformation. But you can register a litter with any kennel club that recognizes JRT's. The JRTCA and AKC differ on standards. The AKC JRT is larger and Taller. The JRTCA breeds Jacks to working standards and they are typically smaller and lighter than AKC Jacks. Unlike the AKC, JRTCA registration is not done by litter. Each dog is individually judged for conformation to the breed standard. But for any kennel club you will usually have to provide at least four generations of paperwork for acceptance.

There is also the UKC and CKC. I am not as familiar with their standards but they both recognize JRT's.

When the Russell came into the AKC many breeders of working Russells did not think the AKC with its show orientation was appropriate for their working dogs and keep their dogs out. They have their own registry the Jack Russell terrier club of America but since a working dog does not need papers to do their job not all register. The AKC renamd the admitted Russells "Parson Russells" to avoid confusion.
Several other breeds have seprate registries for the "working" strain, some with the same name, some different, some allow the working registry dogs to be regestered also with the AKC some do not.

Yeah, the Parson Jack Russell terriers do. I have the papers for mine but never registered her because I am not using her as a show dog or anything.

However, I don't think the short legged ones are officially recognized.

Yes, but most people dont want to pay out extra money, for a piece of paper.I have 1 Jack Russell with no papers. Most people can tell by looking at a small dog such as a Jack or a Rat terriers, that these are Terriers.``

Yes they do!!! Dont be fooled. Every full blooded dog should have papers. The only way they wouldnt have papers is if they didnt register the dog, or if the dog is not full blooded jack russel.

Regular Jack Russells cannot have a pedigree, but why that is, I'm not sure.

Parson Jack Russell is a pedigree breed.

Go to the American Kennel Club web site www.akc.org. You can research your concerns on this site, even send them email & ask direct questions. You can get information on other breeders and links to other organizations that would be more capable of addressing your concerns. Papers are not necessary if all you want to do is keep them as pets.

Good luck

I hope you're not asking this question because you're thinking of breeding them. There are enough unwanted pets out there.

Also, papers don't mean much. You pay, you get them. The one dog we got papers for was, in the words of our vet, a genetic disaster...
