getting darker in the sun - is just fashion. in previous eras it was embarrassing and ugly to me tanned. with the increase of skin cancer i am sure these times will come back again.

other reasons why people sunbath - other animals do to.
for warmth, vitamin d, healing and growing. look at plants they cant live or grow without sunlight for an extended period of time and neither can we.
this is what i found:
Vitamin D –

Strengthens the immune system. Exposure to sunlight increases the number of the immune system’s white blood cells in the body. Moreover, sunlight increases the number of lymphocytes, the most powerful germ killers of white blood cells.
Provides pain relief.
Elevates the mood.
Improves mental function. One study revealed that after exposing participants to 20 minutes of bright white light in the morning, they became more alert. The brain images showed that regions of the brain involved with alertness and some cognitive processes became more active.
Increases muscle tone. In turn, it burns up more calories.
Helps in weight loss. Sunlight increases the body’s metabolism by stimulating thyroid gland function. Resting Metabolic Rate is thus increased and more calories are burned.
Lowers cholesterol. Because there is so much cholesterol just underneath the skin, when it is changed by sunlight to vitamin D, cholesterol from the blood is sent to take its place. Two hours after a sunbath, an average of 13% reduction in human blood cholesterol, takes place.
Aids in calcium assimilation and strengthens bones and teeth. Dentists have observed that people living in cloudy areas, where there is not much sun, have worse dental decay than those who live in the tropics, where the sun beats down on them many hours a day.
Increases the volume of oxygen in the blood. Sunlight increases the capacity of the blood to carry more oxygen and take it to our body tissues. Even a single exposure to ultraviolet light in the sun will greatly increase the oxygen content in our blood. Bronchial asthmatics, who could hardly breathe, were able to inhale freely after a sunbath.
Discourages growth of cancer.
Has an insulin-like effect on the body – stabilizes blood sugar. Simultaneously, sunlight helps to elevate the blood sugar that is too low (in hypoglycemic persons), while lowering the blood sugar that is too high (in diabetics).
Prevents type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia.
Improves liver function – helps the body to eliminate toxic chemicals and environmental pollutants.
Balances hormones. Sunlight reaches the pineal gland through the eyes and affects the pituitary gland, which controls the hormone production of the other endocrine glands in a beneficial way.

I like to get a slight tan because it evens out my skin tone. I hate having that 'farmers tan' where my forearms are a shade darker then my upper arms. Plus, I think it looks terrible when I have tan arms and pale legs. I like to be an even color. I DON'T sit out in the sun like people did 'back in the day' but I take advantage of it when I go to the beach to swim. I always use sunblock and I've NEVER been to a tanning salon. My only reason for wanting a tan is that I want to be an even color all over the visible parts of my body. I don't have a 'deeper meaning' for it that I know of since I'm happy being pale. I just hate being half pale/half tan in the summer.

My mom grew up in the 50s and 60s and used to cover herself in baby oil and lay in the sun. She's got permanent skin damage from it now and she'll always be a shade darker than she naturally should be. You can see the sun damage on her face and she's got to cover it up with makeup. She even had a bit of skin cancer that she had removed a few years ago. She NEVER used sunblock and still doesn't when she goes out to do gardening, even these days. She's from the days when a dark tan meant you were healthy and in fashion. Plus, she said it helped clear up her acne when she was a teenager (it's true, it does a bit since the radiation burns it off or something...)

For a few reasons:

1) having a tan will hide any imperfections (pimples) & can also make you look more toned

2) to get the daily dose of vitamin D

3) there is some chemical in the sun (forget the name) that makes a person feel better/lifts their mood (so, it can be sort of an anti-depressant)

Basically, people who find a darker toned skin attractive will like sunbathing because they think the darker skin is more physically appealing. Those who are not as attracted to the tone of a persons skin won't be as prone to sunbathing.

It all boils down to personal preference.
