first when the Type Writer was introduced around 1885, the alphabets were placed in alphabetical order, but then all the people knew exactly where the key would be & hence the typing speeds of all the people were tremendous. This would jam the type writers as the technology at that time was not as developed as it is today. So they thought of scrambling up all the alphabets so as to decrease the speeds of the typists.
Hence, introduction of QWERTY keyboards. The history behind all this is pretty exhaustive but I've tried my best to write it in brief & simple language.
I hope I've helped You.

When the first keyboard came out, "the one with the ribbon" on that thing you had to add and remove the paper. Just to explain it, you sometimes see it in movies if there is an author in the movie. Anyways the letters used to be in order but when people became to fast with them the keys started to jam up. so that's when the keyboard to know now appeared on the market just to slow people down and to space up the letters

The letters are arranged in such a manner such that the most used letters are on 1 side and the least on the other....so the arrangement is made such as to access the alphabets in the minimum time possible
