well, if you want it on an astronomical scale, we are all self-replicating pieces of star stuff, orbiting on a piece of star stuff, and thinking about making more star stuff like us out of non-us star stuff. We ingest the star stuff that the star stuff in our body needs, and that gives us the energy to continue in our quest to make more star stuff.
In order to make more star stuff like us, we need to get another piece of star stuff just like us, but with the correct parts. The star stuff that we call "humans" all possess a strong desire to replicate (which we call "sex"). There are several different types of star stuff: the type of star stuff that delivers the genetic material to the other type of star stuff, which serve as a catalyst for making new star stuff. The star stuff that recieves the genetic material has the right stuff to take that genetic material and fuse it with her own stuff to create... more stuff!
(we call the star stuff with the delivery agent "men", the star stuff with the tools to make more star stuff "women" and the little star stuff that comes out "children")

This question probably belongs in 'biology'. Humans are designed to have a strong urge to mate. The ones that didn't failed to reproduce and thus were eliminated from the gene pool by natural selection long ago.
