It can get confusing the bigger you get, because gas tends to get trapped in some women as they run out of room in their abdomen.....One of my doctors (with a strange sense of humor...lol) jokes about "Are you really feeling ______ or is it a fart caught crossways in there?"
But it's true sometimes, you cannot tell the difference, and the bigger the baby gets, sometimes it feels like both....like they are moving and pushing gas around at the same time in there!
I have found though, that the baby's movements tend to be a little more assertive, and quick, to where the gas pains tend to be slower and less noticeable....and of course, the bigger baby gets, the easier you will be able to tell! Wait till you are about 36 weeks along, there will be no mistaking your baby's moves! LOL
But in the meantime, press your hand against your abdomen and get a feel for what is your baby....usually their movements are more abrupt than gas pains is what I noticed when I was around 26 week range.

Our doctors have told us during our last two pregnancies that if you want to feel the baby move then eat somthing really cold like ice cubes or ice cream, apparently the baby can feel the temperature change when the cold hits the stomach and has a real tendancy to move away from it. It does no harm to the baby, its sort of like tickling the baby before it is born. You can also feel for what will be like butterflies fluttering around in one place, little spasms if you like, and when you can feel them odds on your baby will have the hick ups. You will definately be able to the differance between gas and the baby, gas does not feel like your insides are being used for boxing practice. We have had six kids so far and are pregnant with our seventh and these are just a couple of tricks that work for us. Good luck, Maus

They feel very close to the same at first.. Soon those little flutters that feel like "gas" will become harder and you will know for sure. I would guess though that at 26 weeks, you are feeling baby for sure!

You just have to listen to your instincts. You've dealt with gas, at some point, all your life. You've only been pregnant for 26 weeks. Just ask yourself 'does this feel like gas?'. I'm 28 weeks pregnant and know what you mean. However, just listen to yourself and your body :)
Congrats and good luck :)

good question , it is hard to tell at the beginning but I used to distinguish the two by being aware of how often I would feel it and if there is no pain , and it is more like a fluttering then a rolling gurgle then i am pretty sure it is the baby . it is like a quick flutter since the baby is probobly just adjusting his position. like if your were trying to get more comfortable ona chair :) hope i helped LOL .

It isn't always easy to tell the difference but it will get easier, as the baby gets bigger you will notice distinct prods from either arms or legs that just cannot be mistaken for gas.

Technically, if you had gas you'd fart, right? So I suppose if you don't, it's the baby moving. Oh, and congratulations on your pregnancy!
