It can be called either. Ive heard that southerners call it "soda" and northerners call it "pop" When my cousin came up from Texas she had no idea what "pop" was when my grandma asked her if she wanted one. My husband also spent some time in Texas when he was in the Army and he noticed the same thing. When he first went down there, if he ordered "pop" in a restaurant, they would look at him like he was crazy. He got into the habit of calling it "soda" and I've also picked up the habit in the last couple years. My daughter calls it "pop" though because she cant say "soda" yet.

I've always called it coke cause when I was young that's all there was. but to answer your Question it started out as soda pop the went to just pop and now is called soda. at least thats how it is where I come from.

Soda but I'm from Jersey. The first time I heard someone call it Pop here in Indiana, I so didn't know what they were talking about.

Depends on where you come from~~Canadians call it pop! Southern U.S~~soda! Some even call it Soda Pop! I call it Pepsi and I think I'll have one~thanks!

In Minnesota, I hear it called pop.. It would be strange to hear someone ask for a soda! But people look at me strange in other states when I ask for a pop! hahaha
