Ella could be Elly if she wanted to be but there isn't much you can do to nickname Rachel. An Ella is less likely to run into a lot of people with her name. I like both names but I think Ella is the stronger choice.

in Hebrew, Ella means other and Rachel means favorite wife. On that basis i would say Rachel but it's a name of some of the most hated people i have ever met. Ella on the other hand is different, i have never met any-one with this name but have met people with variations such as Elly and Elly-anna (although i'm pretty sure it's 'ie' not 'y' for a girl) so i would ultimately go with Ella.
