I have heard alot of mixed opinions about sunbeds some people saying they're good in moderation and others saying they're the worst thing since marmite (that's if you don't like marmite of course)

I'm off to dubai soon and a friend recommended i go on the sun beds to prepare my skin. (& i'm sick of looking like a milk bottle and fake tans just don't work for me, even the salon ones. I think it's the smell)

What do you's think?

Oh i'm blonde with really fair skin and tons of freckles. for those you ask about skin type.

Bad - definitely. Sounds like you have the same sort of skin tone as me, and I am RUBBISH at putting on a fake tan (mega streaks!!). I've personally found that Johnsons Holiday Skin or the new Dove one are really good. You have to persevere so you can build up the tan, but it goes on much more evenly because you only do a slight 'tan' at a time. Hmm just remembered an ickle problem though, I went swimming in a chlorinated pool when I was all lovely golden and tanned, but I came out with neon green legs d'oh! But, I still use it 'cos other than that it's brill!

Sometimes, you just have to laugh at some of these answers. And since my dad has had his own sunbed hire firm for 15 years, I think I can speak with some level of knowledge on this one.

Sunbeds DO NOT turn you orange. They use exactly the same UV lighting as the sun on a MUCH lower level. If you turn orange in the sun, you will turn orange on a sunbed. In my experience, it's only the bottle tanners who are orange and believe me, there are enough women (and a couple of guys) in my office for me to know THAT is true.

When used correctly, a sunbed is 80% less likely to do damage compared to the sun. By correctly, I mean not going on for too long before you're ready.

Having blonde hair and freckles, I'd say that 5 minutes to begin with (depending on the type of sunbed) followed by a good moisturiser then building up your time as your tan gets darker.

For me, the WORST thing you could do is go straight to Dubai (have a good time btw) and get burnt on your first day. That's much more dangerous than anything else.

Yes sun beds are bad for you..but so is the sun
If your are going to use a sun bed then start now because it will take more then one go to see any chance in colour
Start with 15mins
the first few days
Then go up to 30mins then 40 mins.
It is a good idea to prepare your skin as you will burn in Dubai
the heat and of sun is very different to that here
and it would be awfull if you burnt the first day and couldnt go out in it for the rest of the week.

Just using a sunbed for a short time will be Ok
its when people use it everyday that it becomes bad

The newest tanning beds take out the burning rays, and just have tanning rays (UVA). You are right next to the UVA bulbs, so you are getting radiation much faster than you would at the beach. In fact, just a single 15-to-30 minute salon session exposes the body to the same amount of harmful UV light as an entire day at the beach! Since you are not burning, you also get a false sense of security and stay longer, getting even more damaged. Tanning beds make your skin wrinkled and leathery. They emit mainly UVA radiation, the rays responsible for tanning—not to mention premature skin aging, melanoma and immune system damage.

Very bad if you are blonde. Wear a high factor sun cream. The only thing you can do is have a spray tan and try to put up with the smell. Have a great holiday

Bad, bad, bad!! Prepare your skin for the sun by keeping it mega moisturised and drinking loads of water. I'm sure you know how to look after your skin whilst in the sun, be especially careful with your fair skin though. Have a wonderful time in Dubai!! :-)

i have fair skin as well and if you burn easily i say pass on the sun bed. sun beds are known for being just as bad as the sun, its really whether you want to risk getting burned or not. different studies show that more and more women are getting skin cancer because of frequent tanning but if you wear sun tan lotion it might help. i say read up as much as you can on tanning and your skin type, then make an informed decision.

sunbed uv rays are more harmful than natural sun rays, this is because they are concentrated. with your skin type i would avoid at all costs. your likely to burn which is an indicator of skin damage. on your holiday i suggest you use a suncream with a very high protection level. no tan is worth risking your health for. have you tried a spray tan?
