"The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in New York City. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York. It stood as the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until the construction of the World Trade Center North Tower in 1972, and is now once again the tallest building in New York after the destruction of the World Trade Center in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The Empire State Building has been named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The building and its street floor interior are designated landmarks of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, and confirmed by the New York City Board of Estimate".[

It probably retains its fame because of the part it has played in cultural history, particularly movies. It has been a well-identified feature of such movies as King Kong, Sleepless In Seattle, Independence Day, An Affair To Remember, Godzilla, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Love Affair, Thunderbirds, Live and Let Die, The Time Machine, The Day After Tomorrow, and mant television productions including Doctor Who, Star Trek, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers and Inspector Gadget.

People all over the world can identify and name it. I'm not sure any other building has this claim to fame no matter the height or architecture.

**Andy Warhol's 1964 silent film Empire is one continuous, eight-hour shot of the Empire State Building at night, shot in black-and-white. In 2004, the National Film Registry deemed its cultural significance worthy of preservation in the Library of Congress.

The Empire State building is iconic of New York City. Despite it's rich history, including having been crashed into by a B-52 bomber, on the 79th floor in July of 1945; The Empire State building was the first structure to have more than 100 floors and remained the tallest skyscraper until 1973.

Just like with all real estate-- location, location, location! The Empire State Building is in New York.

The Sears Tower is in Chicago.

It also may be a question of history and architecture. I think the Empire State Building was built first, and it has been a tourist attraction for a long time. Sears Tower is also a tourist attraction now, but it is not as architecturally impressive as the Empire State. It's not quite as pretty-- at least in my opinion.

Because, the building was done in "ART DECO" of the 1930's, an amazing building that has ART, not just room in it, I have always had more interest in the Chrysler building, it was kind of forgotten but, is much like the Empire State Building. The old "PENN STATION" in NY was AMAZING as well, somebody should have been dragged out into the parking lot and shot, for tearing that down ! Did you know that they exhausted an entire marble quarry in ITALY, to build the original "PENN STATION" ! It was disgusting that they tore it down !

Because of its dates. It was completed in 1931, and not superseded until 1973, so for a majority of the people now alive, it is still the building which they first learned was the tallest in the world.
