Depends on if it's storming outside. It is safe and actually better to leave it on. I rarely turn my computer off unless I'm rebooting or there is a storm raging outside.

Good question. All my friends leave theirs on overnight but I turn mine off. I believe the act of turning it off and on uses more power, but your PC will last longer if it is turned OFF when not in use.
I'd love to know what other people think *stars the question*

I know a lot of people who leave their computer on for days, weeks, and even months at a time, but you have to have a really stable computer for that without any memory leaks. I always like the performance after a fresh start-up so I turn mine off =)

In the early days of home computers it was thought best to turn them off at night. But, now, experts say to leave it on 24/7 - but only if you have adequate virus protection.

Hardware wise, end user PC is not design for long working hours, it will shortened the life spam of your hardwares which is working non-top even when it's in sleeping mode like fans, power supply unit and etc. For software wise, end user OS especially like WinXP is not design for non-stop operating. The memory management will not cope to prevent system crash if the system is running too long without giving a chance for it to restart and refresh the memory.

i read an experiment on this once. they found that about the same amount of electricity is used from booting a computer up every day as it is to leave the jerk on all night. i say turn it off....sleepy time is important for computers. reboot helps them unjumble.

My home theater PC is a bit more frugal at 65 watts. Using the same formulas, that costs me $81 / year or $6.75 per month.

OFF. It will save you lots of money by reducing your electricity bill, prolonge the life of your computer, specifically the battery and moniter, and you will also be helping the environment by reducing energy use and waste.

if you have no a good reason to leave it on,please switch it off.
some people have programmed their comps to do daily backups or run security updates at night. if you are not doing any of those it is wise to leave it off.
incase of a stormy weather outside your comp will be safe.incase of an unexpected power outgange you dont lose anything. Also your comp will function better and faster from a fresh startup

Unless you are downloading or running Folding@Home, turn it OFF. Otherwise, you will just be contributing to more greenhouse gases.
BTW, the PC was never designed to run 24x7 doing NOTHING.
