I am doing my site in php. But since html will be replaced by xhtml(I don't know a thing about it) I would like to be up to date.

But before I go and learn about xhtml I was woundering if I will run into problems using it with php?

A good html 4.1 coder will find very little difference between html and xhtml because they would already be using semantically correct mark up and have good coding habits such as closing tags like as

. No problem using xhtml with php.

...we don't really know if html will be replaced by xhtml - html5 and xhtml2 are both flying around at the moment!

xHTML is a simplified version of the previous HTML versions. It is cleaner and easier to use and it reduces work load. It's best used with CSS. PHP won't have any difficulties with whatever HTML versions BUT it gets difficult if you really bother about producing a totally clean xHTML output (search for this: what is xhtml dtd). Think of it this way, PHP outputs what you tell it too. If you write the code to output xhtml it does so.
