Spend all of your spare time on Yahoo answers and then just quit. The longer you are on and use your all your questions answered daily you will be a top contributor. Just quit cold turkey and never look back is how you get out. Just hope Tony Yahoo and his minions don't come looking for you or you could end up buried in the Pine Barrens.

They're trying to conceal the algorithm, but I think that it's based on the number of best answers in a given period of time. As long as you keep the ratio of X or more best answers within the last Y many days, you get the label.

one becomes a top contributor if their answer makes sense to the asker...so it's subjective.
Y would someone stop somebody to be a top contributor? jealousy maybe?

I think that is given by who ask the most in a certain area.

I don't know, and no one is telling! I was one, then I wasn't. Then I was again, for about a minute, then I wasn't again! Does anyone understand this?
