Impossible to say, since it also depends on
* what you print -- pictures use a lot more ink than words
* size of print cartridge -- older HP ink carts have up to 28 mL of ink. Latest HP carts have like only 9 mL of ink.
* how much you print -- clearly, more pages, you print, the more ink you use.
* print mode selected -- draft mode use less ink than normal or "final" mode.

Well for a black & white printer, it is normally about 300-400 pages. Which might seem like a lot, but laser cartridges usually last for 3000-4000 pages.
If you use a printer a lot then a laser printer is much better value for money and the quality is usually better (inkjet printers usually run a little bit so the result is not really as good as a laser on ordinary paper).
The main reason to buy an inkjet is because the purchase price is very cheap, the can often print to the edge of the page, the large paper printers are very cheap, they are small and portable and of course they do colour.
If you have the time, you can buy the inkjet refills, which are really cheap, but can be messy and time consuming.
I won't even think about talking about colour inkjet cartridges because the variation gets way out of hand, with some printers having very small cartridges and others having very large ones.

Personally my ink cartridges always dry up before they run out.
As mentioned above ink cartridges come in many shape and sizes. The shape and size of the cartridge will depend on the type of printer you have.
Working for companies as the IT consultant I have always changed out black cartridges more then color ones. Because people always print documents instead of pictures. It usually last a month and sometimes a week for big companies...
So if you plan on doing documents then you will be replacing the black ink first. But you might want to get a laser printer that uses toner cartridges instead of ink if you are doing alot of printing. Not to mention they look a whole lot better then an inkjet printer.

it all depends on usage... the amount of ink that's actually in the cartridge.... what you print and in what quality. I have an HP all-in-one that can get out about 200 pages before the printer starts telling me the cartridge is going. But that will vary with every printer and printing output styles.... your really not going to get an accurate answer about this... everything is going to be rough estimates.... your not going to be able to say...."for you printer you will get 421 sheets of single spaced paper," it's just not happening that way......

depending on your printer and depending on your printer use. if you use draft quality then both black and color ink will last longer.
usually the company provides a average of how many pages you can print every month.
"Recommended monthly volume
How many pages a machine generally prints or copies per month. The recommended volume can help determine whether a printer or copier is best for use at home, or in a small, medium, or large office."

It depends on the capacity of the cartridge, too. Many cartridges come in either high or low capacity. However, I should think that an average cartridge would last a couple of months.

It depends also on the cartridge used. They can come in many shapes and sizes and as such they vary greatly in how long they use. Not a question any person on here can answer and anyone that does give you an answer is only guessing and totally unreliable.

All printers have different cartridges and therefore it is impossible to say how long they will last. If you name your printer you will get a more accurate answer.

ink does not really go off, as long as its used one in a while it will work fine. Ink manufacturers put use by date on cart just so they can keep there products cycling.
Keep the printer cool and use it once in a while, even if its a test page!
