Well.. I've been listening to music from years, but i recently recognized that i am not aware of all these types : rock, rap, r&b, pop etc...... etc. !!
Can someone tell me what are the various types of music and do we call them 'TYPES' or is there any specific word for it? How many types r there in total? How do we recognize what is what?

Types can also be referred to as categories or the French word genres. They are like colours: Some are definitely what they are, whereas others are in-between mixtures that one person can call one thing and someone else just as reasonably something else.
Rock means rowdy music with electric guitars and drums played in real time, or at least an electronic imitation of that sound. Rap has the words recited instead of sung, usually to a "hip-hop" backing - stark repetitive samples. R&B has changed its meaning several times since the term was coined. It has usually meant the pop music of Black Americans, currently sweet smooth melodies with lush semi-computerised backings, but originally down-market jazz when the phrase was invented. Pop is a general term for anything where the hope that someone will pay money to buy the music takes precedence over the perfomers' own satisfaction. You can endlessly split into sub-categories, so there is no good answer to the question of how many kinds there are.

They are called 'Genre' or 'Sub-genre'. There can be as many as there are different types of music. The way to tell which is which is simply by the sound of the song. If it rocks, it's a rock song. If it twangs, it's probally country. If there's lots of talking about booty & beer & blunts, it's rap.... and so on!

Alright! Music is Universal and it each has it different genre,culture and style.You get RAP-which is poetry but in rythem. R&B-Which is rythem and blues.Rock-which is more instrumentally based (get you electric guitar,drums etc).Jazz-a slow kind rythem which has piano,acoustic guitar etc.Pop-which is a more up beat,funky music.
