explanatory, but honestly, what does the "self" cleaning one do that the manual cleaning one doesn't??

right now we have a gas stove.. would it be worth it to run a new 220v plug and convert to an electric stove??

Self cleaning oven. You set the timer, lock the oven door and push start. It takes about 3 hours. The oven gets very hot. You'll end up with a bit of dust in the bottom of the oven that you wipe up with a damp paper towel.

The manual cleaning involves elbow grease and oven cleaner. I always let the oven cleaner set overnight and then it doesn't take so much effort.

I have a gas stove that I love. When you turn off the burner, it's off. I think my oven is electric however and it works fine.

All the professional kitchens have gas stoves. I think the reason may be better control of the heat.

The type of stove you use just depends on your tastes. Gas stoves have their drawbacks as well as electric.
Gas stoves are easier to control for heat and changes in heat are almost instant. If you have something that is over-cooking or boiling over you can turn the heat down and not have to worry about overflowing as much as you would with an electric stove. Gas also has a shorter cooling time for the stove as well.
Electric is easier to clean than gas, and is usually a little easier on the pots and pans.

The "self cleaning" oven is basically a feature that locks the oven shut so that you can't open it. Then while its locked shut the element will turn on and basically burn off everything that might have spilled on the bottom. Manual cleaning will alway have to be done.... so get out the Oven Off (r) and start scrubbing.

Manual Clean Oven

It is an extra cycle for the oven. It heats it up to 750deg to burn all the spills off. We have it, but seldom use it. If something gets spilled, then we just clean it out manually. When you use the auto feature it will lock the door during the cycle and not reopen agan until after the cycle has finished and it has cooled down. You still have to clean out the dust that is left over and maybe some stubborn stains. It's not worth it to me, but my wife does most of the cleaning and she may have another opinion. Good luck

Self cleaning cleans inside spills by burning off the residue at high temperatures.
Manual means you have to clean it yourself.
Electric is more expensive to operate, I prefer gas myself, it's hot right now (no waiting) and you can adjust the temp easier.
