Transgenic species have genes added that allow them to make some chemical or have some attribute that comes from another species. A common example is bt corn that makes a toxin that is usually made by a bacterium. Instead of applying the bacteria to the corn, the gene is put into the corn and the corn makes the toxin itself to poison the caterpillars that feed on the corn.

Benefits: the farmer does not have to apply the bt powder containing the bacteria or use another insecticide. The corn takes care of the insects itself.
Problems: we don't understand all the ramifications of having beneficial insects feeding on this genetically modified crop, nor do we understand the longterm effects of this chemical on people. We can't know the longeterm effects until a long time has passed. So we are doing this giant experiment on ourselves and on the environment without really knowing what will happen.

Another drawback is the fairly limited market for the crops that are grown from the genetically modified seeds. Some countries have bans on importing GM plant materials ... so there's the economic ramification.
