My son & I have a GREAT bond ( much better than I ever had with my father ). I'd like it to be special, symbolic & unique. Could be lettering ( he likes tibet script ) or symbols or designs. We are open so long as it appeals to both of us & represent our father/son bond. Depending on the size & actual tatoo ( after choosing ), then we will decide on what part of the body it will go. So in your ideas to us, don't be limited to the traditional arm or shoulder. He will be 20 years-old in May 2007 & I'm in my late 30's. Thank you to all that reply.

maybe you guys could get chinese characters! love, hope, peace are characters commanly used by tattoo lovers. or you could tattoo the word father and the word son in chinese. the back would be a nice place to put this and it'll symbolize a strong bond. its nice you guys are very close!

It should be something that each of you enjoy.
and a picture that can be "cut" in half, so that when the two of you are together it can be seen as a whole.

A picture or phrase that is significant to the two of you.
A good one is: Those That Would Give Up Essential Liberties For Temporary Safety, Deserve Neither Liberty Nor Safety! (Ben Franklin)

I might consider something like that except he is 15 months rather than 15 years.

Look into your family history, each coat of arms has a family motto, mine is (for example) Virtus en Ardo. I like the family motto as it is symbolic of family- which you are and is linked to the name- which being father and son you are both carries of. Its a phrase unique to your line and is something that future generations, should they feel the bond, could mimic and join in on. I think its a great idea, and I hope it turns out beautiful!

Make a list of all the things you have in common. You are likely to generate a few ideas to consider from that. Also, look through art and drawing books from all over the world. You may find some inspiring images there. There are several books on symbolism in art, literature, and philosophy, so take your time. Also, talk to tattooers, they see lots of things you might like. honey, a tattoo is a life long thing. you are both still young so you need to really think this through before you get it done.
firstly, make sure you have it done somewhere on your body that if needs be, you can cover it up.
the best way to come up with a design is to sit with your son and both draw what you have in mind, then choose a design that you both agree on.
personally i would go with something tribal that entwines both of your initials.
good luck.

Why don't you both get a photo took together, you can then get the photo made into a tatoo and put on each others body with the date - you can never loose the photograph and it is dated. He could have "me and my dad" and you could have "me and my son". Howz that. I have a thistle (in color) and Made in Scotland on the sole of my foot....... cos I was.

How about your family name in large print On your arm your son's name above it and yours underneath and on your sons arm, your name above it and his underneath. Or maybe a slogan such as "United" with ones name above it and ones name under it?
