I'm writing an essay and I need an informal way of mentioning the italian diaspora. The first to answer will get the ten points, obviously, as long as the term provided is used.

The term we use is "emigrazione di massa" and this is referred to the period lasting about 100 years (from years 1870 till years 1970).The first Italian stats about emigration start in 1876 and report that in the period from 1876 till the year 1976 about 26 millions of people have left Italy to emigrate to other Countries.About 53% to other European States (mostly France,Germany and Switzerland), about 44% to the Americas (mostly North and South America, just a small percentage in Central America ) and balance abt. 3% to Australia and Africa.

I can't recall any slang term for "italian diaspora".
The word "diaspora" means same as english (= the spreading of people from one original country to other countries)., and it's not so common is use.

Anyhow "Italian diaspora" should be refered to the massive emigration from Italy (as well as Germany, Ireland and others European countries) at the end of 19th century.

Hope this can help ...
