Well personally i think middle names are a great way to put a family or loved ones name as part of your childs name, for exapmle i had my son and his middle name is Andrew, that is his fathers first name.
But i think Ryan would go nice with Joshua Smith..Joshua Ryan Smith...Purty!

Honoring a beloved family member is always nice with a middle name. Or something a little more unusual like Forrest or Tanner would be nice. Joshua Tanner Smith. I like that one.

You might want to go with something a little unusual since Joshua Smith is so common.

In our family the 2nd and 3rd names are, either both Grandpas or Grandmas. For example My son is Jedd Thomas Henry and my daughter is Hayley Phillipa Hazel. Keeps every one happy. Also having 3 names gives more rhythm to the name.
Joshua Joe
Joshua Liam
Joshua Ian
Joshua Mckenzie.

Go with something unusual, so that the kid can use the middle name or initial when he's older. That way, people will be able to find him on google and other things. So, maybe something like Xavier or Zach, or maybe your maiden name.

Kieran, Glenn, Hayden. I always believe that If the first name is long the middle name should be short and vice versa.
