I am posting for a job internally where I work and one of the job qualifications listed is a "sense of humor". It goes on to say something like, "if you don't like to laugh, you won't like it in such-in-such group". The rest of the qualifications are serious in nature and I guess they thought they would throw this in for fun...I don't know. Either way, I can't leave that section blank and I'm looking for a way to respond to this that doesn't sound too goofy, but also lets them know that I do have a fun side. Can anyone help me with a decent response to what I consider to be an odd thing to put on a job qualification list? Thanks!

The posting (as do all of the job postings where I work) has a list of job qualifications associated with them (that the hiring manager has written). Next to each qualification, there is a blank field for your response. To me, leaving ANY field blank (no matter how strange the "qualification/skill" sounds) would be a negative.

Is it phrased as a question that requires a response, or is it just part of the job description?
If you need to put in a statement, you can say something like you have a well-developed sense of humor and would enjoy the opportunity to work in an environment where it would be appreciated.

Is it actually a question to which an answer is required? On the one hand you say it is in a list of job qualifications, on the other you say it needs a response? Is it perhaps a matter of simply ticking the box or do you sense that they want a witty answer? If the latter you need to be very careful. In what field is the job so we can think of something appropriate?

Having recently left a soul-crushing corporate job, I can vouch that "a sense of humor," is utterly vital for survival.
It surely is an odd question. Maybe they're just your regular cubicle dorks who imagine they're very very funny. (Dismal thought.)
I guess I'd say something like "There's always a time to laugh and a time to get down to work and I like to think I'm up for either occasion." You've then covered your @ss if it's a trick question, and you don't sound like "Whoopee, let's par-ty!" so to speak.
Boy, any group that describes themselves in those terms sounds pathetic and smarmy. Hope I'm wrong. Good luck!

If it is a question, and I don't think it is, just a statement on the appplication that it is a fun department to work in, I think it is legitimate, especially if you are applying for a cartoon character for a childs theme park, or Santa Claus at Christmas time. Any other job, it would be an unusual question to ask, but again I don't really think it is a question that they are looking for answer for.

Tell them something like "it's important to enjoy your work and to help others enjoy it as well" but that it's "equally important to maintain a professional workplace atmosphere." "People like to do business with businesses that can do both of these things." I was in a hiring/firing position for 6-plus years, where I read through countless applications and resumes. They'll eat that up.
