romanesque's popularity spread the style across most of europe-- it said "i am european" -- carolingian says "i dig charlamagne" who had been dead for 100 years. its kind of like most people don't want to inherit their grandmothers cinder block ranch.

I don't know the specific answer to your question, but I can give you a very educated guess, since I've taken 6 architectural history classes. Most changes in architecture have to do with the competitiveness of the architects. It's really that simple. Designer A has done 6 buildings, designer B has done 3. B wants more work, so he or she develops a new style so people who are familiar with all 6 of A's buildings will be tired of them and decide to have B design their building so they have bragging rights.
