I like something that involves community health/community welfare/community work ( like helping the poor etc) and something that involves field work - not a desk Job. What kind of Degree should I look into and what kind of Career options do I have. I basically have a strong desire to help people make their lives better. Should I consider a joint degree in Public health and something else?

Thanks in advance

How awesome that you would like to work with those that are poor and from a lower socioeconomic background! Perhaps social work would be what you are looking for. To search various careers, here is the site from the US Occupational Outlook Handbook: www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search box 'social worker' or such.

I have read that there tends to be a high burn-out rate due to the nature of the work, but you sound like you have such a passion for the field. Public health schooling should certain help as well as it gives a person more credentials and credibility to able to talk with community groups about health concerns or even parenting groups. No one wants you to burn-out just while in school either, while you are taking a double major in social work (or a similar major such as human services) along with public health, know what I mean. How about doing some volunteer work with the various populations that you are interested in helping such as homeless shelters, tutoring, mentoring, local non-profit organization. Bless you!
