Most people would answer this question saying "the human race has a natural instinct for destroying and war" but i think on the contrary.. I feel that people just can't leave well enough alone...Allot of people are looking at ways to "get rich quick" and unfortunately weapons are always in high demand. So that is on allot of peoples mind... so in summation in looking to make a quick buck they see opportunity in new technology to "create" something even newer and that just happens to come in the form of a "new weapon"
Of course this is just a opinion and we all know what that is!

Beer was created by the egyptians and it is not a weapon. Not everything has been turned into a weapon and tell me this would you rather be living in a world without technology. Just look at how some cultures live without technology, do you wanna be in a jungle dying of disease because you cant get medication. Or getting sick because your water is not purified. I don't, i will take my chances with the crazy people in the high-tech world, at least then i can live a little more comfortably.

Fascinating topic you bring up...
I just read an article recently about how many companies that develop technology WILLINGLY share the technology with the military...they want their technology to have military applications so it becomes another market for their product. Furthermore, if military researchers take the technology and improve it, they will often give it back to the corporation...so it's a win/win for the company. Right now the main focus is on IT products and the communications industry, for the fight against "terrorism".
But what interests me is the following...It seems to me that many technologies originally have military purposes and then they are eventually spun out for civilian use. So, take the internet...it was invented under ARPA, the Advanced Research Program Agency of the Pentagon, with UCLA helpings...original purpose being for scientist and the military to communicate on a network for research purposes or in case of national emergency
And how about computers? mostly funded by the military also and the dept of energy...only later spun out to the private sector for the population ( the home computer)...and this is just the tip of the iceberg!
So its actually been a situation where lots of technologies are actually created or perfected by the Pentagon and then private industry takes over when its profitable...funny how it's our tax money, so we help create this and then we have to pay to buy the products we help create...curious isn't it?

We're a wepon obsessed society. We constantly stuggle to find the upper-hand so should war occur, we won't be messed with. It's not about using the power, but having the capability to use it.
