- tell them you are a casting agent for a movie company and you are interested in having them in a movie (interesting bones is a good catchphrase) Eventually it will flop, but you just asked about starting a conversation.
- You can also ask them about their opinion about a religious subject, judging by the religion section here at YA that really gets people going. But it's tricky.
- Practice magic tricks and pull e.g. an egg out of their ear. Don't do dollar bills though, they will ask you to use this to pay for their next drink.
- borrow a kinkayou or some other very tame furry cute pet. Train it to sit on your shoulder. Or if it's outside walk your really cute cat, or something somewhat unusual (ball pythons aren't bad either, many people will talk to you). Animals are a great conversation starter.
- wear a really cool hat. Not a silly one, an unusual e.g. an Ascot style hat. Particularly if you are guy you will get a lot of comments.
- tell somebody who wears a blue sweater, that you particularly like the red sweater they wear. That will make sure you have a longer conversation than just, oh, thanks.
- tell them that they have the most adorable ear lobes or big toes. It's not something people are regularly flattered about. And yes, flattery works best.

Say that you like a certain piece that they're wearing. It makes people believe that you are a person that is attentive.

Or if they're doing something, say that whatever they're doing seems interesting.

It always works to say "Hi, I saw you from across the room and you seemed like an interesting person." It always makes me so flattered that I forget that I don't even know the person.

Ask a question, one that takes more than a yes or no but not a whole lot of thought. Use your surroundings. Maybe at a party ask about the music; outdoors, maybe the weather or sunset.

Look at what their wearing, carrying, eating, watching. I sale cell phones - and I enjoy starting conversations with people by asking them how they like their cell phones - but I am also a dork.

Everyone is interested in themselves, so check them out and make a personal comment about them, using a leading question. For example "That's a great (blank) you are wearing/ have! Where did you get it? My name is........ blah blah blah. Also smile. (And I don't mean grin like a Cheshire Cat.)
