I was promoted about 6 months ago and got a raise to my hourly wage. If I step down from this position, can/will my employer decrease my pay to what it used to be? BTW I live in California

Yes they can.If they have a pay structure based on position. If you drop to a lower position with a smaller pay scale they can decrease your wages accordingly.

Why do you feel you deserve the extra money if you do not do more responsible work? In other words, why would a fast food place pay you the wages of a manager if you are only flipping burgers? Sure you can argue a wage increase for time with the company, but if the raise you were given was specificly for taking on extra responsiblities, then you are not entitled to it if you no longer do the work. Remember that the company now has to hire somebody to fill the position you are stepping down from.

Just my opinion formed by living in an "At Will" state. California law might be different.

Yes, perfectly legal, and it is also ethical and moral.

The raise came with the new position and responsibilities. You can not keep the money without doing the job. They will have to hire someone else to do the job and he will be expected to get the pay.

Keep in mind, if you step down, you will NEVER get another promotion with that company and you will be stuck doing whatever it is you are doing...

I would have to say yes. If you voluntary take a lower position, or one is given to you by Disciplinary action then yes, however if it is through ill health, reaction to means beyond your control (i.e the job is no longer viable for the company, or re shake of the department) then the company should keep you on the higher band pay, but no increase until the new position catches up.
Check your contract, HR department for further details.

Hi Scoot,
The Labour Law of a given country and the contract agreement between the employer and the employee are the interface between the two parties. Therefore, just look at your contract agreement and the Labour Law of your STATE.

Wish you Good luck!

Of course they can. A lower position generally means less responsibilities, which is part of the reason why the pay is less.

Now, *will* they? I don't know, but I'd say there's probably a good chance that they will.
