small classes -- yes, it met that
knowledgeable profs that aren't jerks -- yes it met that
close to home - it met that one too

since then i've learned that it's all about personal preference and any perceived differences in quality of education are illusory, so these are the sorts of criteria i suggest when i advise high schoolers (i.e. criteria that are based on tangible preferences, not the mythical "reputation" as strongly as some seem to consider it).

It had to be #25 or above in the Brown college rating system, preferable #5 or higher. When a college major meets those qualifications -academic performance, high quality professors, present achievements of past students, and reputation in the world- It has everything I need.
And it did. The university I attended, UC Davis, was 4th.

1. Whether it offers the Major I'm interested in

2. Quality of Education (Proffessors, Syllabus, Learning Facilities)

3. Cost

4. Good Job Placements
(Sorry I just had to add in number 4 because otherwise my list wouldn't really be complete. But well at least you can still see the top 3 on my list.)
