I think it is the old and no longer popular term for the graphics card slot. They used to call graphics card as "graphics accelerator adapter card".

Old graphics card were mostly good for 2D but poor in 3D. The graphics accelerator was for speeding up 3D graphics in games.

It's a slot in the computer, either an AGP or PCI-E or both. They take a specific type of fast graphic card which are needed by games or graphic intensive applications.
