I second Carlos but, just like the cell phone, you may not always be able to connect, no matter what type of connection you have. Most people that use their laptops on planes are not connected, they are just doing work. (Me). Motels anymore have wireless connections for you to use, you get access when you check in if you ask for it. If you're using your laptop while driving your really too stupid to even be on YA, and that would really be stupid.

One additional thought, you still have to connect to your ISP (internet service provider) as the router is not a server.

To connect to the internet wirelessly through you laptop you will need a home network setup (router and broadband internet) at home. If you are outside you will need to find a location that offers Wi-Fi internet (Wireless Fidelity) through coffee shops, airports, hotels, restaurants etc. These location will charge you by the hour or day usage. Your best bet is to find a location that offers Free Wi-Fi internet access.

Remember that you have to be in that location in order to receive a wireless internet Wi-Fi access signal. Once you travel or away from that location your laptop will no longer receive a wireless signal and you will not be able to get onto the internet.

Many companies are working on Wi-Fi internet access tthroughout entire cities meaning you can be any where within that city and not be tied to a coffee shop, hotel, airports or a specific location. This will rollout gradually as the years go by.

There are two types of wireless internet (that relate to this question).

The first type is wireless through a router. Wireless internet through a router enables you to pick up wireless signal within a given location (such as a home, coffee house, business, etc.). That will allow you to connect whenever you are stationary. --if you are within broadcasting range.

The second type is satellite or wide area coverage internet, which is usually provided through a cell phone company, and allows you to receive wireless internet at almost any location. This is a subscription based service and requires additional hardware. It is usually about $100-$250 to set up, plus monthly fees.
