Hey,
Technically, the number of classes per semester is lower in college. But the workload actually increases, so it depends on what you mean.
For example, you might have 6 classes in high school. Each class is only an hour long, and you might get an hour of homework per class (at most). To get homework over the weekend would be considered criminal... or at least harsh.
In college, you might have 4 classes. On average, they're about an hour and a half each. However, two of these classes have discussion sections, so that's an extra two hours of class per week. Then you have to do virtually all of your work on your own time... including the weekends.
This is not to scare you away from college, though. College is great, but time management is essential. You get a lot more power (in the form of flexibility and options) but with great power comes great responsibility. Or something like that.
May God bless you.

The real answer to your question is that it depends on how many you took in high school and how many you take in college. This is not a preset amount. You work it out with your academic counselor. If you are a hard worker, and get easily bored, take more classes. It also matters whether you are going to a semester school or a quarter school. Semester school take a longer time per term, so the work is stretched out longer, usually from 14 to 18 weeks. A quarter school is usually 10 weeks, with the 10th week being your finals week. There the classes are over faster, but more intense, and there are at least 3 quarter per year, and 1 or 2 quarters in summer.

many schools are set up with varying systems, but usually you need 9 courses per year.
in some cases, that means five and four for the two semesters
in other cases, there's a special one month quarter for one course, so it would be 4-1-4 for the two semesters and that short semester in between
to answer your question, far fewer classes but more work per class

Usually you take around 5 classes per semester, but I know a lot of people who do 3 or 4 and then do a couple during the summer.
Do you like torture crammed into a shorter time period or spread out without a break? thats how you decide ;-)

To graduate in 4 years, assuming you don't attend during the summer, you need to take 5 courses per term at most colleges. If you don't care about graduating in 4 years, there is flexibility that allows you to take a lighter course load.

this is. attempt to work out in case you could take a type on the faculty you % to bypass to, in case you won't be able to then bypass and take the class at an area college. community faculties tend to have duel enrollment for best college scholars. the income is evidently good, could improve your possibilities of shifting right into a 4 year college, and you presently have college credit.
