why are people so prejudice against science fiction?

I think it's just poorly marketed as nerd lit--and who wants to be seen as a nerd? Also some people assume it will be too academic/hard science for them to understand. But the interesting thing is that it seems that sci fi is becoming more popular! I work at a bookstore and we can hardly keep sci fi and fantasy on our shelves. Also, they seem to have changed the way they market it, from the new covers coming out, to the way the write the blurbs on the back. As all things are, it is cyclical. In the 1950s there was a big sci fi trend and I think we're on the upswing of another sci fi trend.

I myself used to be prejudiced against it, and thought I'd hate it, but I started picking books up on a close friend's recommendation and it has a lot to offer. I think once the bad rep/bad press gets taken care of people will want to read it more. Of course, there will always be the die hard one genre readers...but one day, they'll run out of books. They almost always read faster than writers write anyway.

Where did you hear that? Lots of people love Sci-Fi. It's one of the best selling genres. Also look at all the sci-fi shows on TV. If people didn't like it why would there be so many that are
so popular.

I hated it for years. Then I took a sci fi class. Changed my life. I think it is because people want dumb stuff. They don't want to have to use their brains. They think that sci fi is just Star Trek and stuff like that. It is so much more. I learned.

I am a long time fan!
I can't imagine a grand conspiracy of prejudice against SciFi - when it is such a thriving industry... We even have endless numbers of Novels, Movies and an entire TV Network dedicated to it.

Some of the grandest Science Reality Text Books were written by one of our greatest SciFi authors: Isaac Asimov.

Disregard your detractors, dear one. Enjoy the genre.

Peace.

You talk to the WRONG PEOPLE.

I guess it's because it's so far beyond possibility, experience, and reality that it seems rediculous to some.

Me, I love Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (old and new versions), Dr. Who, Red Dwarf, Star Wars, the books of Robert A. Heinlein (except his last one) and Arthur Clarke, and Star Trek (esp. Deep Space Nine).

You just gotta find the right people.
