I do not think fast typing would work for a work at home job. Most of these jobs are scams. Work at home jobs that are legitimate would be more along the lines of customer service or sales. When you call up to order flowers from 1-800-Flowers, instead of having all their customer service reps in a call center, 1-800-Flowers may contract with a company that allows its workers to work from home. All they need is a computer, a working phone, and fast internet. So, when you call 1-800-Flowers, you might get Bob from Denver or Mary from Orlando. This is especially true in the next few weeks, which is probably the biggest flowers day of the year, on account of Mother's Day, so the company will need more employees.

As you can see, such a work at home job is easy to set up. You just log into the company's web site and enter in the forms and the order is placed.

But, for you to enter in text would mean it wasn't entered in at all. If it were, why would they need you? So, if someone wrote out an essay on a piece of loose-leaf paper, then you could transcribe it into a PC. But, most kids nowadays already have PC's and would enter it in themselves, although not as fast as you would.

Working on site for someone else, the best options you have are working for a law firm's word processing department. Everything in law is words so it is the one profession that still retains word processing departments. Unlike say working for a bank, which may rely more on numbers and charts and PowerPoint presentations, law is almost all words.

So, I'd check in with a temp agency or a word processing service and see if they have work with law firms.

If you want to start your own home business, especially if you are a kid, along the lines of babysitting, I'd suggest putting up ads in your school. Since there would have to be a way for you to get a copy of what the customers want transcribed, I'd suggest either a copy of whatever they may have written in their own hand or an audio recording of what they want written down.

Chances are most kids will write an essay on their PC, which means they don't need you. That leaves them making a recording, which is easier than them typing.

How would you get a recording. Well, they can either record it themselves on their PC, if they have a microphone and a recording program. I've linked to a good free program below. They can then just email it to you and you type away from it. Make sure that they keep their voice clear.

If they don't have a microphone, you can have them call you up and you can type as they speak.

You can also make your own recording of their essay by telephone. Some PC's have a way for you to record via the modem. Just plug the phone line and the phone itself in the modem, if you haven't already done so. I haven't done this since I use cable for internet and the same may be with you. If you have a laptop, you may not be able to do so.

Another way to do it from the phone is to buy a device from RadioShack for about $20, which I also have. It allows you to attach a phone line to it, then the phone, and provides a plug, like a set of regular headphones have (not those tiny iPod ones) which you can then just plug into a tape recorder or a digital voice recorder or even a PC's sound card microphone jack. If you do this, you will need an adapter plug, since the RadioShack device outputs in mono and the microphone jack on recorders and sound cards is stereo. I got this on my PC, so if someone calls me and I want to record the conversation, I can.

So, you can do this all to get the information.

If it's just for extra cash, it's not a big investment to do all of these things. For the RadioShack thing it's like $20, plus $3 for the adapter plug. If you need to buy a recorder, it's like $50.

If you want to lend out some devices to other students, trusting that you'll get the device back, you can always lend them a recorder they can speak into and give it back to you when they are done. The advantage of this is that you don't have to listen to them on the phone while they speak and you can work on your own time. But, they may mess up the recorder.

I'd go with either them recording it at home, which just requires a cheap microphone for a PC, maybe $10, and them emailing the recording to you.

If they can't do that, then them calling you up. If you don't want to spend any money on devices and such until you've made some money, then just take down what they say as they speak to you on the phone.

I'd look into medical or legal transcription. There's a large demand for skilled transcriptionists in the U.S. at the moment.
