Is there concrete proof that a sports car hybrid (or electric vehicle) will be released within the next 2 years? I've only seen concepts and rumors on the net...

Thanks for the responses, guys. So it looks like Toyota is the way to go in the near future for a car under $50k... Unless someone can say otherwise?

Tesla Motors, Inc. is a Silicon Valley automobile startup company focusing on the production of high performance, consumer-oriented electric vehicles. The firm was started in 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in San Carlos, and has since grown to include several team members with extensive computer, electrical, and automotive engineering backgrounds from around the world. The company is named after the Serbian American inventor Nikola Tesla.

Tesla Motors' first production vehicle, the Tesla Roadster, will be a performance sports car. According to the company, the cars will have a range of 250 miles (400 kilometers), acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH (100 KM/H) in 3.9 seconds, and a top speed of 130 MPH (210 KM/H). Prototypes were introduced to the public in July 2006, and the first production models are planned for fall 2007. Demand was high for the first 'Signature One Hundred' Roadsters, which sold out in less than three weeks.[1] According to a note on the company's web site, as of November 2006 the full run of the "2007 1/2" model have been sold out, constituting 220+ cars.

Toyota has the potential, but it dont think they would launch it in the next two yr. Japanese sport car are called "tuner", they will needs a lot of aftermarket support in order for it to gain popularity. There are still skeptics on Hybrid technology. If they introduce the Hybrid sport into the market now, it would be an extremely poor launch, because the lack of aftermarket supports. Besides, sport cars only makes up 1% of the sales rate in the market, for toyota? a lot less than 1%, since they wants to go green. Thus, probably until Hybrid vehicals becomes more stable in the market, else wise, i see no reason for toyota or any other company would try to launch it while the technology is still under development.

They can make a Hybrid Sports car but why would they? The advantage in Hybrid vehicles is in the stop and go traffic of city driving, not on a mountain pass or a race track.

Sure they can get 400hp from one easily. The Lexus 400h makes hp in that range. But why?

The Tesla is an all electric sports car that is faster that a Ferrari, and cheaper. There are other electric sports cars already on the market such as the "t.subZero" which has 220 hp and goes 0-60 in 4.9 seconds.

In a recent Road and Track magazine, they had a feature article on a 400hp hybrid that they were supposed to be definately building for 2009. It was a V-6 hybrid in a Celica/Supra style body. It looked really good. I am friends with the owner of a big Toyota dealership and I asked him about it and he said he had been told this car was going to be built for sure also. He said Toyota plans on offering a hybrid option next year on every model Toyota makes.

Take a look at the links below, there is one already. Hybrid cars have been around for some time although not just electricity driven there have been many powered by different engines, fuels and solar power.

There are indeed high-performance electric vehicles as you describe, some available now, others soon. Others here have mentioned the Tesla, which can out-accelerate a Ferrari:

Another one is the Wrightspeed:

*
And the Venturi Fetish:

*
And my favorite, the ZAP-X (644 horsepower, 350-mile range, 10-minute recharge time.)
