I think it makes a big difference. When I was a middle school math teacher about 5 years ago, I had many students that didn't do well because they had been convinced that they couldn't do it. "Oh son, it's okay that you have a "C"... I was never great at math myself." How many times do you hear that about reading??
Having patience, understanding, and helping students build on their strengths makes a world of difference. All it takes is one negative comment to make a student feel that math is an impossibility to master.

Do Math teachers have emotions? I thought they were all robots masquerading as humans.
