1. find the least common denominator. in this case it would be 10. so ur next step is to make the denominators all 10 by multiplying by a fraction that is equal to one.

=(9/10)(1/1) - (1/5)(2/2) + (1/2)(5/5)
=(9/10) - (2/10) + (5/10)
= (7/10) + (5/10)
= 12/10
= 6 / 5

2. 17 11/12 divided by 6 1/10
step 1. convert all to improper fractions
215/12 divided by 61/10

step 2. multiply by the reciprocal
215/12 * 10/61 = 2150/732 = 1075/366

Problem 1
9/10 - 1/5 + 1/2 =
Since you cannot add/subtract them right away because they have different denominator (the number below the fraction), you have to FIND their LCD or LEAST COMMON DENOMINATOR ( of the least common multiple)
The multiples of
10 = 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, etc ( 10 x 1, 10 x 2, 10 x 3, 10 x 4 , etc)
5 = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ....
2 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, ...
You can see that 10 is the common multiple.

To convert, just divide the LCD by the denominator and mulitply the quotient by the numerator and retain the LCD
Example:
N/D , where N is the numerator, D is the denominator

LCD / D = Q (quotient) times N = QN/LCD
3/ 4 = n/ 8

8 divide 4 = 2 times 3 = 6/8

From the above, we can see that
9/10 - 1/5 + 1/2 =
9/10 - 2/10 + 5/10 = 12/10
In adding/subtracting fractions,
1) Find their LCD
2) Convert them to similar fractions (Fractions with similar denominator)
3) Add/Subtract their Numerator
4) Retain the LCD

9/10 -2/10 + 5/10 = 12/10 (this is an improper fraction. to simplify, divide 12 by 10)
12/10 = 1 2/10 or 1 1/5

Problem 2

17 11/12 divided by 6 1/10
1) Convert the two equations into improper fractions

17 11/12 = (12 x 17 + 11)/12 = 215/12
6 1/10 = (10 x 6 + 1) /10 = 61/10

215/12 divided by 61/10
In dividing fractions, MULTIPLY the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction:

A/B divided by C/D = A/B times D/C
In multiplying fractions, multiply the first numerator by the second numerator, and multiply the first denominator by the second denominator
a
A/B times D/C = (A x D) / (B x C)
Going back to the pproblem
215/12 divided by 61/10 =
215/12 times 10/61 =
(215 x 10) / (12 x 61) = 2150/732 (this is an improper fraction) To simplify, divide the numerator by the denominator
using the traditional division
2150/732 = 2 686/732 or 2 343/366

9/10-1/5+1/2=
use 10 as the lcd

9/10-2/10+5/10=12/10=6/5=1 1/5

17 11/12 divided by 6 1/10=
215/12 divided by 61/10=
215/12 x 10/61=
10 becomes 5 and 12 becomes 6

215/6 x 5/61=1075/366= 2 343/366=2.9371( to 4 digits only)

ha Its been forever since I've done anything like this. Ok if I remember right its finding a common denominator so you really have 9/10 - 2/10 + 5/10 . 9 - 2 + 5 = 12 ...... 12/10
