Mitosis:
1. starts with one diploid cell and ends with two diploid cells
2. separates the copied DNA into two nuclei, each just like the parent nucleus
3. occurs in one set of stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
4. is used when an organism is making new body cells for growth, development, replacement, repair
Meiosis:
1. starts with one diploid cell and ends with four haploid cells which are the gametes.
2. divides the DNA into four nuclei which have half the original number of chromosomes
3. occurs in two sets of stages: Meiosis I (prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, telophase I) which separates the homologous chromosomes from each other and makes the cells haploid; and Meiosis II (prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II, and telophase II) which pulls the double stranded chromosomes apart, sending the sister chromatids to opposite poles and into different nuclei.
4. is used to make the reproductive cells or gametes

The main difference is that mitosis occurs in somatic cells(body cells) and meiosis occurs in the sex cells. There are actually alot more differences, but this is one the most distinct ones.

One reproduces a cell with the normal double helix... diploid... like this.... XXXXXXXXXXX
and the other produces sex cells (egg or sperm) which only have half the helix, like this... VVVVVV
so when the two come together, VVVVVVV and
VVVVVVVVV they make the normal chromosome structure.... XXXXXXXXXX... so one produces the cells identical to itself, XXX goes through whichever process, and makes XXX but if XXX goes through the other process, like in the texticles or in unborn female ovaries, XXX makes two cells, and each has half, so VVV.
hope that helps a bit... I can't remember which is the normal, every second of the day thing, and which is the "special sex cell" replication... Sorry.
