They were elected on the implicit mandate that they would end the war. They have told Bush they will approve more money for the war, BUT only if there are deadlines for withdrawal. Bush is refusing to set these deadlines, but is insisting on the money. If the democratic contolled congress gives in to Bush's demands I think it's political suicide. People who voted for them will be very upset and not vote for democrats in 2008. So I think they can't afford to give in to Bush. What's your opinion ?

You are right, they cannot afford to back down now. That's why we voted for them. To put some checks and balances on The Decider and remind him that per the Constitution, the Congress does have a great deal to say about the war. They're in a tricky situation but I think they can handle it if they are very careful and stand as a bloc. Bush is in a tricky situation himself. And he's got Republicans distancing themselves from him, the numbers grow every day. If the Democrats can hold out and stand firm, and this surge hasn't shown something more positive by the end of summer, Bush will be in a world of hurt as far as his position goes, not to mention what it will do to the Republican's chances in the '08 election.

The anti war people who support the democrats are a minority. A loud and influential minority. They, alone, cannot keep a candidate in office. The democrats are stuck between Iraq and a hard place. That is why they are so hesitant to cut the funding. It would be political suicide for the entire party. However, they will most certainly loose the support of the anti-war single issue base.

They will not vote outright to defund the war. They will not vote to give the funding unencumbered to the president. So they will push it as far as they can until a compromise is reached that will allow them to claim some kind of victory and hope the base will stay with them for another try in the future.

Politics is disgusting now. It just makes me sick to hear that people are voting a specific way just because their Republican, or Democrat. Its not right. They fight all day everyday about every issue, and now that their split pretty much 50/50 they can't get anything done!

Vote 3rd party next November to give another group a voice we all need!

You're right they can't.I hope they don't because I think he's playing a game right now.I don't for one minute believe he'll pull out if Iraq doesn't start showing responsibility. He just wants the money so he can have open ended access like before.

They won't back down, they have no reason to. The weight of public sentiment is behind them, not behind Bush.
