It gives the parents a legal recourse rather then a shotgun wedding or sending in the girl's brothers for a visit.

The age of consent is very purposeful. This may discourage older men who pray upon young girls who believe that lust is love, resulting in consequences that they cannot handle. To my knowledge the age of consent is like 16 or somewhere around there? Can a 16 year old raise a child if they get pregnant? Should a 16 yr old have to deal with the emotional trauma of abortion or adoption? Do children deserve to be raised by a child, having to go to the health department for check ups and on food stamps just to eat? There are a lot of reasons there is an "age of consent", and I think it is completely appropriate. Anyone younger then 16, or even really younger then 18 has no business having sex at all, let alone with somebody who is an adult. And any mature adult would not even want to have sex with a child. I think sex with a younger person, someone who isn't even old enough to vote or drink or other such adult things, is behaviour reserved for sexual deviants.

Well it is just based on averages. People feel that by 18 people are physically and mentally mature enough to make their own decisions. It doesn't mean that all 18 year olds or even all 20 year olds are mature enough but there are enough to warrant that they can make their own decisions. Really if there were no age of consent laws then children could be charged as adults in all crimes. Also you would have 12 year olds getting married every two weeks. Just look at high school and middle school dating.

psychological traits are not determined by a number, age is not a number, it's a chronological determinate. maturity comes with age, and there are bench march based on average years, that individuals can make more rational choices. age of consent is to protect he innocent form those who use there maturity as a weapon to have something over there victim. it's not an exact science, but it's necessary. I actually believe many age requirement are to young. and you can't dsay experience is the only steps to maturity, it takes time, years, etc.

Yes it does. It keeps the bounds set by civilized society in the forefront. However, if it is not enforced, it does nothing. It's not a matter of psychological traits. It's a matter of human physiology. Young girls should not be pregnant. It stops their growth completely. When a 12 year old gets pregnant, she will no longer grow. Ask your physician about this. It's actually scary stuff.
