Well strange as it may seem.He treated them with great respect. When he began his long march into hiding. He warned his commanders and supporters to treat the civilial population with honor. They were not to steal, rape or harass in any way.Everything his army took, they paid for.His philosophy was whether advancing or retreating If you mistreated the people you could'nt go through thier territory again.

Peasants had little money and very few rights. They followed Mao with the idea everyone would be equal and they would have a greater say in their daily lives. The peasants who owned land were unhappy once he collectivized the farms because they now no longer owned the land they worked.

Mao, as an intellectual, was contemptuous of peasants. At various times he starved them by the millions. At one point he wanted to remove their names and identify them by numbers. The "great Leap Forward" and collectivisation were complete failures. He knew, and did not care. In his search for international significance he sent aid to European eastern bloc people when his own people were immeasurably worse off.
