There are a bunch of reasons. It's cheaper and easier for the construction crews to work with. It's also the traditional building material, so more contractors are familiar with it. Most importantly, it's nearly impossible to get a mortgage on a house if it's constructed using "unorthodox" materials. The result is that it's nearly impossible to build using modern materials unless you can afford to pay for the entire project in cash.

It's readily available, one of the cheapest materials, easy to work with so it reduces labor costs, and easy to insulate. In the Northern U.S., insulation is a big consideration. Masonry walls can be insulated but they're quite expensive to begin with because of the labor. I like the idea of using metal studs, because it could be reasonably affordable and you might be able to play with the structure in a way you can't with wood. There are also open web steel joists made that you can put plywood between, pour concrete on for a floor (the top of the joists knit into the concrete slab), strip off the plywood and re-use it for the roof. I've also detailed frames for houses using structural tube columns and rolled beams. All of these options, while interesting, get more and more expensive. That last one was for a house that cost over a million dollars, and that was over a dozen years ago.
But the main reason is, it's easy to grow here. It's a crop.

It is a cheap and reliable of material. It is also a renewable resource. We have a history of using wood in construction and it is a proven source. People know wood and trust it. We build houses out of wood for the same reason we build furniture out of wood. good luck

Cheap-@ss contractors. The profit margin is higher.
I miss my concrete block construction house.
But what I REALLY want is a house with a steel frame. A steel frame would free you from the restrictions of traditional architecture, enabling you to do some really creative floor plans.

Wood construction allows for insulation to be added into the walls and roof of the homes, concrete and brick usually do not accommodate insulation, although that is changing somewhat these days, Styrofoam bricks for foundations and such.
