From a blog essay on Hootie and the Blowfish:

"Actually, lead singer Darius Rucker claims he wrote "Let Her Cry" about a relationship in which he was the jerk, then reversed the genders. I'm not sure whether to believe him, but the gender instability in that anecdote shows in the song. The chorus goes "Let her cry/ Let her tears fall down like rain." But since it's the male singer does all of the crying in the verses of the song, the chorus seems to be about him, too, despite the female pronoun."

One very important thing I want to say. Music is like poetry & the menaing may vary person to person. There is no right or wrong answer. Sometimes the lirycs may b sad & the melody actually makes u happy.
This song is sad & sounds sad, a man who fell in Love with a woman that is going through a hard emotional state. She will never love him the way he loves her. She is always drunk or high. He tries to b there for her, but it is a rooted problem that began with her dad. That is why song says says "Dad's the one I love the most" u can interpret that anyway u want it's a song. The fact that she's in emotional distress remain, their relationship is really sad & he is just watching his girl b a train wreck that will not let him inside her heart. She finally leaves him & he tries to move on accepting the fact that he has to let her cry, let her go.... However, he still in love with her and sad.

Nice sad song, usually it's the other way around.
