My unit is a split unti that's pretty old but the freon is freshly charged and the AC repairman has looked at it several times. Even when it's off, it seems to blow hot air. The thermostat is digital and is about 8 months old. This just started happening about a week ago though we've had numerous problems with the AC. Any help would be appreciated and please don't respond with "Buy a new AC".

The unit is an electric heat pump. My house is probably 25 years old and I suspect this unit may be original equipment because it's box-shaped and not the taller models you see today.

Make sure that the compressor condensor is running. That's the outside half.
Make the fins on it are'nt obstructed with dead leaves, etc.
It could be a number of things including a refrigerant leak that the technician did'nt find.
Best thing to do is to get another guy out to your house to put the gauges on it, & go from there.
If it needs refrigerant again, it has a leak, & needs to be checked accordingly.
It's definately a job for a licensed professional, not a DIY fix.
Hope this helped, good luck!!

I am curious, you did not provide enough information about the type of system you have but the one thing I do note is it is not hot enough outside for the unit to be circulating hot air. The fact that you said the unit is blowing hot air makes me think that you may have a heat pump. If that is the case a stuck heat sequencer will keep the fan running and the heat blowing. Another cause is a lot of heat pumps energize the reversing valve in cool if the stat is not doing this then the unit would run in the heating mode.
How much refrigerant was added?? You could even have a wiring short or an intermittent problem that is making it difficult to trouble shoot. At any rate call a different contractor to look at the unit unless your service provider is covering it under warranty.

Any further information I can help you better. Heat Pump, Gas Heat, or Electric heat???

Make sure the outside compressor is running. Make sure the setting on the thermostat for the fan is in auto not in the on position. If the compressor is running and the blower is going, you may have a freon leak and it will need to be checked by a repairman. I know you don't want to hear it, but just in case, get ready to buy a new one if the compressor is shot. It would be more reliable than just replacing the compressor. GL

How low do you have the thermostat set to? If it is too low the A/C will run steady and it will freeze up. Resulting in it blowing warm or hot air. The temp must be set at a degree that permits the unit to shut off and it defrosts the ice on the coils.then it will automatically start cooling again.
Tip: when setting the temp take it down slowly and when it comes on leave it set at that temp or just a degree or so lower. This permits the unit to shut off and on and keep you cool.

If the unit is running even if the System Mode is OFF, and the Fan Mode is in Auto, then you probably have a fan relay that is stuck closed, or a bad sequencer. This is something you'll want to call a contractor on. If you don't play with electricity for a living, you could get hurt.

what do you mean that it seems to blow hot air when its off?..........If it is still blowing hot air when the unit is off then there could be a few problems.....bad fan relay.....bad sequence switch.....this controls the heat strips and if it is stuck in the on position it is possible your fan and some heat would be on even if you have you thermostat set on cool...would also cause the air to be warm when the outside unit is running.......other problem would be low freon...you could have a bad freon leak the other servicemen didnt fix....you also need to make sure outside unit is running when the thermostat is calling for cooling....

IF IT IS BLOWING AIR AND STAT IS OFF. THE FAN/LIMIT SWITCH IS STUCK ON AND KEEPS THE BLOWER RUNNING AND FURNACE WILL BLOW THE AIR BUT FURNACE WILL NOT BE HEATING. THE AIR WILL NOT BE HOT AS THE GAS IS NOT BURNING. IF THE FURNACE IS HEATING AND STAT IS TURNED OFF I BELIEVE YOU HAVE A BAD STAT. THESE TYPE PROBLEMS ARE VERY EASY TO TROUBLESHOOT BUT YOU HAVE TO GIVE LOTS MORE INFO TO GET A RIGHT ANSWER-FOR INSTANCE-GAS OR ELECTRIC FURNACE?

Make sure your filter is clean. Also check the "intake" area to see if there are any leaves or other debris blocking it.
