Hi,

4 and 1/2 feet away

23 and a half feet long minus 14 and a half feet equals 9 feet.

17 and 3/4 minus 8 and 3/4 equals 9 feet as well.

If we divide that extra 9 feet into 2 equal parts, 9/2 = 4.5 feet.

So there is 4.5 feet of space on each side of the garden.

I hope that helps!! :-)

The fence is 9 feet wider than the garden and 9 feet longer. Assuming that the garden is in the middle of the fence, there should be 4.5 feet from the garden to the fence all the way around.

Assuming the garden is in the middle of the fenced-in area.

1/2(23.5 - 14.5) = 1/2(9) = 4.5' (width
1/2(17.75 - 8.75) = 1/2(9) = 4.5' (length)

Answer = 4.5'

23.5ft - 14.5ft = 9ft/2 = 4.5ft.
17.75ft - 8.75ft = 9ft/2 = 4.5ft
There is a 4.5ft difference all the way around.
