They Mayan calender is becoming popular because it's supposed to end in 2012, but I guess if it's going to end, it may not be useful for too long.

I assume you mean system, rather than something you but at Barnes & Noble.
The common-use calendar was intended to mark Jesus' birth, but failed - he was born 3-7 years BCE according to scholars.
I view the current calendar as one of common usage rather than a Christian one. Things can originate in one tradition but catch on in other ways, like St. Patrick's Day - the old bible-thumper would probably be appalled at drunken revelry on "his" day.
