There are a wide range of opinions on these 2 subjects but this is what i found out based on my experience:
Best Paid Antivirus : Kaspersky or Bit Defender
Best Paid Firewall : ZoneAlarm Pro
Best Free Antivirus : Avira Antivir PE ( AOL Active shiled is OK too but they're using an older scan engine from Kaspersky. AVG is popular but it has the worst virus detection of all the free antivirus)
Best Free Firewall : ZoneAlarm (there's also a new free firewall call Comodo but i am not really interested in it since ZoneAlarm Pro works great)
>>You can get all of these apps either on the internet or Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, Circuit City,....

I've been using Bullguard Antivirus for more than half a year now. I think its the best among all that I've tried before. I'd used norton antivirus, mcafee, and AVG. AVG was the worst, I got 100+ trojans and spywares out of it when I scanned it using Kaspersky, then norton is said to have a reputation for which they create their own virus. The Bullguard antivirus comes with antivirus, firewall, spam filter, backup, and antispamware. You could download the 2-month complete trial version to see if you like it. You can then decide whether to buy or not afterwards, but I assure you, its worth the price, and its not so expensive either, compared to norton or mcafee. Bullguard is able to scan and delete almost all virus and malwares (except for some really severe virus, then you could ask the help of the customer support, they will help you).

zonelabs is probably the best firewall out there, the only one i know that stealths port 113, and best of all it's free for personal use. As for antivirus most work the same, some are resource hungry like Nortons, may i suggest Grisoft's AVG or AntiVir, both are exceptional and they are still free, just because these are free don't mean they are going to work any less effectively.

Before you decide to buy the antivirus and firewall, you need to keep in mind that
- all products more or less offer the same functionality
- installing the top anti-virus and firewall does not ensure that your PC is 100% protected.
PC protection is about awareness
- what are the threats to your PC
- what precautions need to be taken to avoid security breach
- why does your operating system need to be updated, how often and how do you update
- How are the anti-virus signatures updated, how often, whether automatic or manual
If you do plan to buy an anti-virus/firewall, look for a product that offers both; its easier to manage.
Good luck.......

in my opinion i haven't use Kaspersky, yet i've got been utilising AVG unfastened version for the previous 2 years and that i'm very satisfied with its overall performance. in maximum situations that I had long undergone another "branded" anti-virus utility did not come across the viruses in my harddrive/thumbdrive yet replaced into effectively detected and healed/bumped off by utilising AVG. As for firewall, in case you're utilising WinXP, turning on the XP firewall would be sufficient.

Top Anti Virus is Kaspersky
Top firewall in my opinion is zone alarm but some may argue Sunbelt Personal Firewall (was known as Kerio)
Of course you should also consider in a hardware firewall as well by this I mean a router.
There was a really good one out there until Symantic took it over then it was horrible.

Top selling is Norton. Top free is AVG.
Norton has everything you need to protect your computer, plus a firewall.
AVG is just antivirus.
There is an old saying; "You get what you pay for."
This is also true with computer protection. Anything that is free will not have everything you need. I use Norton and have had no problems of any kind.
