I think we need to fully understand what is happening here and I don't trust that a government investigation or a major media investigation is sufficient.

I'd like to see an impartial criminal and forensic investigation. I'd also like to understand the objective causes of this event and how we can prevent this type of event in the future. The Warren Commission and the 9/11 Commission have proved that the United States is incapable of putting together an accurate report through their distinguished panels.

This event needs a serious and objective investigation without the customary bias of government investigations. We've not been getting the truth. Perhaps we could invite an international panel to investigate this. The EU might offer us help in taking a close and impartial look at this phenomenon.

It won't stop unless we take effective action against the real cause.

This person was mentally ill. He exhibited threatening behavior, stalked a couple of women, and was brought before a judge. The judge dropped the ball. Instead of committing him involuntarily for evaluation, he allowed Cho to voluntarily commit himself. There's a question on the federal form you must fill out and sign, "Have you ever been adjudicated mentally unsound?" If he had been, it should have been entered into the instant check system. But that was up to the judge. I think this is a call to err on the side of caution and if the person can clear himself/herself after evaluation, then they should be allowed a means to clear the record. That's reasonable. I was surprised to hear that they're introducing legislation to grant money to states to enter this sort of info into the instant check system, because it's supposed to be there already. But this has been an issue from the start because of privacy rights, although I'd think privacy is trumped by public safety. We also have to check teachers and workers in day care centers--hey, even workmen who go into public schools while students are there are supposed to be cleared. So this isn't just a firearm issue. But if a judge won't step up to the plate and say, "Buddy, you're flagged," it still won't work.

No one can ever say! This world is full of freaks and losers that blame the world for their problems. This one though, from every indication I have seen, should have been locked away a long time ago! We can only hope that somewhere along the line, as a society we grow up and realize that we sleep in the bed we make! The problem is that in this open society we love, it does breed a one upsmanship! Some deranged loser out there is at this moment planning a bigger one! Answer--I can't put it down here--yoohoo would throw me off. I think we all know the solution though...

Unfortunately it will happen again. There is no way to prevent it, only to stop it once it starts. Waiting for the police is not an option, because the whole thing could be over by the time the police get there. Stricter gun laws will not work, because it didn't stop this guy.

P.S. From what I heard, this guy was seen by a professional who thought he was a danger to himself and others. That professional is obligated in most states to notify the authorities and have him committed.

Incidents like this usually set off a
chain reaction.
The Hokie massacre was sad for
the lost students and their families.
It also magnifies the dark side of
our species.
But the real bottom line is this:
Chow Mein Ho (or whatever his name
is) is now wrapped around last night's
fish bones, and waits out front for
gabage pickup.

This form of murder will escalate until we have had enough. The first time a homicidal punk is collectively swatted down like a fly from his fellow students will be the last massacre. Running and cowering from these psychos is tantamount to chumming for sharks. If anyone is going to gun me down, better make those bullets count. I, for one, will not be heading for a window. More likely, they will get a desk up their azz.
