Landslides is what's most feared about volcanos. First off, land is soft, so any small earthquake, or heavy rain can set them off.
Earthquakes are the next thing that people worry about.
An eruption will give enough time to evacute, so casualties should be minimal in this event, provided that the volcano doesn't explode.
Aircarft flying low without proper instruments or directions, and poor visivility might also crash into volcanos.
And last, many volcanos are also known to have very fertile land, so they can actually be good to people.

Most of the answers above tell how volcanoes affect the land. Considering how people are tied to the land, it is pretty safe to say that people living in volcanic areas are affect that way.
However, lets not forget the sociological and psychological aspects. For centuries various cultures have worshiped volcanoes, even making sacrifices to appease the gods. Even today people living around the Ring of Fire fear the next big erruption of their nearest volcano.
Then there are the health risks. When Mount Saint Helen errupted in the 80's, a huge ash cloud coverd thousands of square miles-breathing in the ash could not be healthy for all those people.

If a volcano erupts it can hurt the land... It takes years for the land to restore itself. People who live near a volcano can be in danger of being affected by the erruption because of ash and lava... Homes, farmland, and other things can be destroyed.
