The density of water is 1.00 g/mL. That means that 8 mL of water have a mass of 8.00 grams.

Now convert the mass of the water to moles by using the molar mass of water.

8.00 g / (18 g/mol) = moles water

the molar mass of water is 18 because H = 1 x 2 and O = 16

Since the density of water is 1 g/mL, you know that with 8 mL of water, you have 8 g of water. Take this divided by the molecular mass of water which is 18 g/mol, and you will get .4444 moles of water.
