I've been practicing my voice using vocal lessons for a week now and now my throat hurts. Is this normal or have I strained my vocal chords?

You probably strained them pretty good.Give your voice a rest for a day or so,and see what happens :)

It depends. It could be normal because your voice isn't used to working that hard, but it also could be strained because you over-worked it. Give it a rest for a little while. Drink plenty of water. Get some tips from your vocal teacher on how to sing from your diaphragm rather than your throat, which is dangerous. Also, here's a couple of other tips I have learned from mine:
1. instead of clearing your throat before you sing, swallow. Clearing your throat is rough on your vocal cords.
2. Avoid peppermint right before singing. This means no mint-flavored gum until after your done.
3. Also avoid chocolate just before singing.

It's like an athlete working out. You're exercising differently and it hurts so good. Don't scream out Ozzy Osbourne lyrics right now. Just drink some lemon juice and get good rest for the next gig.

you have strained your vocal chords. Make sure you drink lukewarm water with a dash of lemon.

voice strain happens now and then........give it a good rest so you don't do more damage.
